Our senior academy, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, is a partner academy of the newly launched UK Young Academy, a UK-wide network of early career researchers and professionals who will collaborate to tackle important issues in society. The UK Young Academy was the 50th to join the global movement of Young Academies when it launched in June 2022.
We are delighted to announce that the UK Young Academy’s first cohort of members has now been selected. This cohort of 67 members will play a key role in shaping the strategy and focus of the organisation in its first few years. The UK Young Academy brings together researchers, innovators, clinicians, professionals, academics and entrepreneurs to tap into their collective potential and expertise.
With diversity at the heart of the UK Young Academy, we are pleased to share that:
- 13% of members are from Scotland, 7% are from Wales, and 5% are from Northern Ireland, with 75% from England
- 85% of members are from academia; 15% of members are from outside of academia, including private sector and charitable organisations.
- 49% appointments have been awarded to women
- 16% of members identify as having a disability
- 34% of members are from minority ethnic backgrounds
- 21% of members identify as LGBTQ+
We hope that the diversity of voices represented in this cohort will facilitate meaningful collaboration to affect genuine change and tackle the issues facing our society on a national and global scale.
YAS warmly welcomes the formation new Young Academy and is pleased to see the international movement of Young Academies growing inside the United Kingdom. We are particularly pleased to congratulate YAS member Ruth Bowness, who is part of the UKYA’s first cohort. We look forward to working with all founding members of the UKYA to enact positive change.
