Skye – Dunvegan Castle

The Isle of Skye has some amazing views and sights, including this one of Dunvegan Castle looking out over Loch Dunvegan, a sea loch on the island’s west coast.

Dunvegan Castle was first built in the 13th century, but was entirely remodelled in a medieval style in the 1800s.  It’s the ancestral home of the Chiefs of the Clan MacLeod, and is still held by the MacLeod family today.  It is also a popular tourist location and offers seal boat trips, castle and garden tours, a cafe, gift shop and holiday accommodation.

I went to Skye as a child as part of a trip to Scotland. I only have faint memories, but maybe you can tell us more stories for the Coastal Knowledge map?

This page is part of Coastal Knowledge, an online exhibition mapping some of the amazing places on the coast of Scotland.  It includes pictures, memories, artworks, stories and videos submitted by a variety of people including scientists, artists, coastal dwellers, tourists, and community organisations.  We want to share the beauty of the Scottish coast, but also its vital role in the day-to-day lives of people in Scotland- for example, its many industrial roles.

This exhibition is dynamic and ongoing- and we’d love for you to share contributions for it too!  To learn more and submit your own coastal knowledge, visit the main page of the exhibition.
