Dundee was once famous for the three Js – Journalism, Jam and Jute. The last Jute mill closed in 1970. Mackay’s Jam moved to nearby Arbroath (well worth visiting for it’s delicious Arbroath Smokies). DC Thomson is still publishing there. Dundee is home to Bash Street and there are homages to various Beano characters there!

Considered by many to be the video gaming capital of Europe, Dundee was the birthplace of games like Lemmings, Grand Theft Auto, and the console version of Minecraft.  Dundee’s Abertay University was the first place in the world to offer a degree in video game design and has launched the career of many successful game developers.

There are two incredible galleries in Dundee; the McManus Art Gallery and Museum and the V&A on the waterfront.

This page is part of Coastal Knowledge, an online exhibition mapping some of the amazing places on the coast of Scotland.  It includes pictures, memories, artworks, stories and videos submitted by a variety of people including scientists, artists, coastal dwellers, tourists, and community organisations.  We want to share the beauty of the Scottish coast, but also its vital role in the day-to-day lives of people in Scotland- for example, its many industrial roles.

This exhibition is dynamic and ongoing- and we’d love for you to share contributions for it too!  To learn more and submit your own coastal knowledge, visit the main page of the exhibition.
