Siobhan O’Connor a member of the Young Academy of Scotland has participated in the first Ideas Hub run by the Welcome Collection in London. The Ideas Hub is a week-long programme of activities and workshops exploring the links between science, medicine, life and art.

A mix of scientists and artists from different backgrounds were selected to spend a week together at the Wellcome Collection from 3-7th September 2018. The group experienced inspiring talks and workshops, undertook creative challenges and visited thought provoking organisations to inspire transdisciplinary collaborations. A host of topics from inclusive design to climate change and medical morality were explored among others.

Ideas Hub was facilitated by 64 Million Artists, a social enterprise that is a catalyst for creativity in the UK. Some of the activities the group took part in included learning how dance can improve health from Suzy Wilson at Performing Medicine and experiencing The Jungle at the Playhouse Theatre to appreciate how theatre can powerfully communicate personal experiences of life, loss and hope.

Commenting on the Ideas Hub Siobhán said:

“It was a pretty full on experience - imagine putting 25 super excited creators and thinkers in one large space for a week! Each day we were allowed to explore each other’s knowledge, and skills in lots of fun, interesting ways which challenged our perspectives and sparked new ideas. I have left with a great network of people I am going to work with in the future as transdisciplinary research is something I want to use more in my work.”
