Young Academy member questions MPs at Voices of the Future 2019

Siobhán O’Connor, a Lecturer in Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh, represented the Young Academy of Scotland and the Royal Society of Edinburgh recently at Voices of the Future 2019. This event offered young research leaders the opportunity to discuss the future of science policy in the UK with senior political figures at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

The annual platform is organised by the Royal Society of Biology and provides early careers researchers with insights and influence into the policy translation process. They get to voice their questions and discuss burning scientific policy issues with key political figures. On 12th March 2019, the Voices of the Future event was held in Committee Room 14 at the Place of Westminster and streamed live on Parliament TV. This provided Siobhán and others young leaders in science from across the UK the chance to delve into the complexities of key policy issues.

YAS member co-authors report on 'Engaging with Parliament'

New YAS member and Director of the Scottish Universities Life Sciences Alliance (SULSA) Dr Allison Jackson has co-authored a report for academics who wish to engage with both the Scottish Parliament and Westminster.

The report provides an explanation on how the UK and Scottish Parliaments work and outlines a variety of ways citizens can engage with both bodies. This includes advice on contacting MPs and MSPs and guidelines for writing a good committee submission. The report also contains a list of programmes and organisations that help academics gain policy experience, including the RSE Young Academy of Scotland.
While the report is primarily aimed at researchers, it would be of interest to any professionals who are interested in the ways the UK and Scottish Parliaments work, and who wish to engage with policymakers.

YAS members launch “Our Future Scotland” film at Scottish Parliament

James Blake and Siobhán O’Connor from the RSE Young Academy of Scotland and Edinburgh Napier University launched a short film called “Our Future Scotland ” at Scottish Parliament on Wednesday 16th May 2018.

YAS Members participate in Voice of the Future 2016 to question MPs about science

Members of the Young Academy of Scotland today are joining young scientists from across the UK to question MPs about the science issues that matter to them.

At the annual Voice of the Future event, young scientists take committee seats in Westminster's Boothroyd Room, while MPs from the Select Committee on Science and Technology take the witness seats.  This reversal of the normal select committee format aims to engage young scientists in the political process, as well as emphasising the importance of evidence-based decision making in government.
