The Young Academy of Scotland’s parent organisation, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, welcomed its 56 new fellows yesterday at an event at its Edinburgh headquarters. YAS member Ineke De Moortel was among the fellows honoured at the annual induction ceremony.

The new fellows were welcomed by Royal Society of Edinburgh Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, and then given presentations about the Society including a speech about the RSE Young Academy of Scotland by YAS treasurer Dr. Giles Hammond.

The new fellows’ fields span arts, business, and science and technology, reinforcing the Society’s interdisciplinary purpose. Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell said “I am delighted to welcome such a wide range of outstanding individuals to the Fellowship. Each of our new Fellows is elected on the distinguished merit of their work.

In joining the RSE, they strengthen our capacity to support excellence across all areas of academic and public life, both in Scotland and further afield.”

Newly inducted fellow and bestselling author Ian Rankin participated in the YAS’s #AspirationalAdvice campaign during the event.  He offered “Creating keeps us human. Keep creating” as advice to inspire schoolchildren.
