It is with deep sadness that we announce our YAS colleague and great friend Professor Marcos Vidal, has passed away.
Originally from Argentina, Marcos did his postdoctoral fellowship in the States and obtained his independent group leader position at the University of Glasgow’s Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in 2009. Marcos utilised the fruit fly Drosophila to understand fundamental aspects of cancer biology, such as the role of the tumour microenvironment. His team reported an inflammatory reaction from the innate immune system to the rise of tumours, as observed in cancer patients. Importantly, powerful fly genetic tools allowed them to define for the first time the contexts dictating ‘good’ versus ‘bad’ inflammation. His team also studies another key component of the tumour microenvironment: the stem cell niche.
A tremendously talented young scientist, Marcos was regarded as a rising star in cancer research. He will be profoundly missed by his colleagues, students and friends. Our thoughts go out to his family during this difficult time.
