Young Academy Member wins Entrepreneurial Award

Young Academy Member Nigel Eccles, co-founder and CEO of FanDuel, recently picked up the Developing Entrepreneur Award at the third annual ITC Enterprise Awards. The awards were presented by some of the IT industry's biggest names, including Mike Lynch, Founder of Autonomy, Mark Lancaster, Founder, Chairman and CEO of SDL and Mike Tobin, CEO of Telecity, at a celebratory dinner held on Friday 7 June at Plaisterers' Hall in London.

More than 200 people attended the gala ceremony, which is rapidly establishing a reputation as a premier entrepreneur event in the UK's technology industry. The awards celebrate the achievements of the most successful entrepreneurs in the industry and are open to anyone sponsored by a member of the ITC.

GCU Welcomes RSE Young Academy of Scotland

RSE Young Academy of Scotland members met on the GCU campus for the first time for a plenary session designed to stimulate interdisciplinary thinking and research.

A key part of the event was a debate on health inequalities and how all disciplines, from the arts and humanities, built environment, engineering and law to basic and applied biomedical sciences, can be harnessed to cut avoidable and preventable death and disease.

Addressing Hate and Violence Workshop at RSE

Young Academy of Scotland members Jeffrey Murer and Asif Ishaq have organised a one-day workshop on Addressing Hate and Violence: The Scottish Experience of Communities & Complexity. This workshop seeks to explore what can be done to garner the support of ever-larger and diverse groups and communities in the efforts to prevent violence, build stronger, more enduring social relationships and, ultimately, build more peaceful societies. This initial meeting will bring together community activists, police practitioners, representatives from central and local government and local community stakeholders from a range of groups,institutions and backgrounds. Keynote remarks will be from the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Mr. Kenny MacAskill

Launch Event for Lab Notes at RSE

The launch event for YAS Member Dr Jane Stanley’s Lab Notes will take place at the RSE on 14 May at 6pm. Lab Notes is an innovative piece for music and film, set in a modern systems biology lab. The event will commence with the screening of the short film and there will be a panel discussion focusing on the process involved in collaborating between the arts and sciences. Following this there will be a drinks reception. Please view the programme for more information.

New keyboards for thumb-typers, says YAS member

YAS member Per Ola Kristensson is in the news this week with a new keyboard layout which will make "thumb-typing" faster on touchscreen devices such as tablets and large smartphones.

The new system, dubbed KALQ, after the order the keys appear in the keyboard (in the tradition of QWERTY), allows people to thumb-type 34 per cent faster on tablets.

Dr Tiffany Wood heads the Edinburgh Complex Fluids Partnership (ECFP) which works with all sectors across the formulation industry to solve issues and provide innovative solutions. Established in 2012, ECFP is based within the Soft Condensed Matter Physics Research Group at the University of Edinburgh and exploits academic understanding of how the fundamental physical interactions between components define the microstructure and bulk properties (e.g. flow behaviour and stability) of products.
