The First YAS Emeritus Dinner

On Tuesday 23rd May the Young Academy of Scotland hosted the first ever YAS Emeritus dinner at the Royal Society of Edinburgh.

The dinner was attended by several Emeritus members, as well as the current YAS Facilitating Group (FG) and YAS staff. The objective of the evening was to hear from members and learn more about their experiences within YAS, their motivations for applying for YAS and what we could provide, as an organisation, to Emeritus members.

Universities Family Visit Day

An exciting new project begins for YAS next month, YAS members, Dr Maiwenn Kersaudy-Kerhoas and Debora Kayembe have organised a Universities Family Visit Day for refugee and minorities families.

The event is co-hosted by the University of Heriott Watt, Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow and Honorary Fellow at the DIPM, and the University of Edinburgh.

YAS Spring Plenary 2017

On the 20th April, the Young Academy of Scotland held its first Plenary meeting of 2017 at the Scottish Government buildings in Edinburgh. The theme of this Spring Plenary was: For a Progressive and Open Society: A YAS Routemap. The day included a Horizon Scanning workshop, led and organised by YAS members who were experts in the subject, in addition to discussion and reflection on YAS’ current projects and activities.  

We were delighted that Leslie Evans, Permanent Secretary to the Scottish Government, was able to welcome us officially to the Scottish Government buildings during our morning session and answer some of our questions. She spoke to the membership about being bold and challenging, encouraging us to be free-thinking. She urged YAS, “to be fluid and challenging… [rather than] boxed in by political constraints.”

Congratulations to YAS' Rising Star, Dr Koutmeridis

Congratulations to YAS member, Dr Theodore Koutmeridis on receiving the British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award (BARSEA) for his interdisciplinary project, "Inequality, Conflict and Violence."

The project connects economics to applied social science research methods and evidence-based policymaking on the issues of inequality, criminal behaviour, conflict and violence. This prestigious award will allow Dr Koutmeridis to form an Early Career Network on the subject to facilitate and encourage conversation and ideas between experts, academics, businesspersons and policy stakeholders.
