Congratulations to YAS' Rising Star, Dr Koutmeridis

Congratulations to YAS member, Dr Theodore Koutmeridis on receiving the British Academy Rising Star Engagement Award (BARSEA) for his interdisciplinary project, "Inequality, Conflict and Violence."

The project connects economics to applied social science research methods and evidence-based policymaking on the issues of inequality, criminal behaviour, conflict and violence. This prestigious award will allow Dr Koutmeridis to form an Early Career Network on the subject to facilitate and encourage conversation and ideas between experts, academics, businesspersons and policy stakeholders.

Earlier this week, Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, concluded the last of the David Hume Institute’s Politicians & Professionals series. The Young Academy of Scotland supports the series along with the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Scotland, the Law Society of Scotland, the Royal Society of Edinburgh, Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and the Faculty of Advocates.

 

This year, the series invited the five leaders of Scotland’s political parties represented in Scottish Parliament to give speeches and take part in an audience Q&A focused on the context of Brexit and the Scottish local elections.

An Interview with YAS Member, Dr Paracchini

Last month, AcademiaNet interviewed one of our own members, Dr Silvia Paracchini, about her work in the field of Dyselxia and genetics.

StartEDIN Event Success!

Last week, two of the Young Academy’s working groups – Health & Wellbeing and Industry – helped to organise an event at the Edinburgh City Chambers about tech and lifesciences enterprises with StartEDIN. Over 60 people attended the event, which included interactive sessions and discussions as well as speakers from IOMet Pharma and IpOncology. Young Academy of Scotland Position Statement on Brexit

Members of the Young Academy of Scotland have released a position statement on Brexit. The statement calls on the UK Government to "prioritise maintaining the significant gains from the UK's membership of the European Union."
