YAS member leads historical 'A Night in a Scottish Internment Camp' experience

YAS member Anne Schwan is leading a multi-disciplinary series of performances at venues in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Hawick in June.

Produced by Edinburgh Napier University and  featuring Music and Acting students and graduates, the shows will bring the history of WWI internment to life in accessible yet thought-provoking ways. The performances will be followed by a Q&A. This production is funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) and received some coverage in newspapers and the BBC.

YAS member Siobhan O’Connor receives an Impact Award from the RCN Foundation

Siobhán O’Connor, a YAS member and Lecturer at Edinburgh Napier University, received an Impact Award from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) Foundation recently for her research into the history of nursing informatics. She spent the last 12 months exploring the life and work of Derek Hoy, a Scottish nurse who pioneered technology in the NHS.

A One Health Approach to Tackle Toxoplasmosis

Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite which can be very dangerous to those with compromised immune systems.

On 4 April, YAS held an interdisciplinary workshop to discuss the current impact of toxoplasmosis in the UK and how we might prioritise areas for prevention and control strategies.

Young Academy member questions MPs at Voices of the Future

Siobhán O’Connor, a lecturer from the School of Health and Social Care at Edinburgh Napier University, represented the Young Academy of Scotland and the Royal Society of Edinburgh recently at Voices of the Future 2018. This event offered young research leaders the opportunity to discuss the future of science policy in the UK with senior political figures at the Houses of Parliament in Westminster.

The annual platform is organised by the Royal Society of Biology and provides early careers researchers with insights and influence into the policy translation process. They get to voice their questions and discuss burning scientific policy issues with key political figures. On 13th March 2018, the Voices of the Future event was held at Portcullis House and streamed live on Parliament TV. It will be broadcast live on BBC Parliament on Saturday 17th March 2018 at 18:00. This provided Siobhán and other young research leaders from across the UK the chance to delve into the complexities of key science policy issues.
