Dr Raneem Knaj is a Research Fellow at the James Watt School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. She holds a PhD in Electronic Engineering and previously served as Head of the Computer and Electronic Systems Engineering Department at Tartous University, Syria. She also served as Executive Director of the Tartous site of the Syrian Collegiate Programming Contest (SCPC/ICPC), where she mentored student teams, supported their progression to regional-level competitions, and contributed to achieving notable competitive results.
Raneem’s research focuses on artificial intelligence for healthcare, digital mental health, speech and audio signal processing, and explainable AI. She is particularly interested in developing inclusive and accessible technologies for health assessment and decision support, with a strong emphasis on applications in low-resource settings.
Alongside her academic work, Raneem has extensive experience in higher education leadership, STEM outreach, digital skills training, and community engagement. She has contributed to humanitarian, educational, and technology initiatives supporting displaced students, digital inclusion, and women’s participation in technology.
Through her research and public engagement activities, she aims to advance responsible AI innovation that delivers meaningful social and health impact.
