As Professor of Wireless Communications at the University of the West of Scotland, Muhammad has received over £3m research funding from Innovate UK, ERASMUS, QNRF and Scottish Govt.
With over 15 years of research expertise in design and development wireless technologies, he has published over 150 research articles and edited or contributed to 10 books. Muhammad is the recipient of numerous national and international awards for his research in wireless communications such as the 2021 IEEE Communications Society Fred W. Ellersick Prize and the 2019 best journal article award by IEEE Communications Society & China Institute of Communications.
Muhammad has served as a chair and organising committee member of several symposiums, workshops and conferences, including Globecom, ICC and WCNC. He is the Chair of IEEE Communications Society Emerging Technologies Committee on backhaul/fronthaul, and Public Safety Technology Committee Informatics. He is also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Senior Member of IEEE, and an active member of IEEE Communications Society.
