Maria Ana is an Associate Professor at Heriot-Watt University, where she leads a research group focused on novel ultrafast lasers and photonic systems, as well as their applications to sensing and imaging.

Prior to that, she studied Physics Engineering at the Instituto Superior Técnico (Portugal), followed by a PhD in Physics at the University of St. Andrews. She was subsequently a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and Reader at the University of Dundee, before moving to Heriot-Watt University in 2016.

Maria Ana currently holds an ERC Starting Grant, and has been previously awarded the Philip Leverhulme Prize (2011), as well as a Royal Academy of Engineering/EPSRC Research Fellowship (2009) and the IEEE Photonics Society Graduate Student Fellowship (2007).

Maria Ana has also served as a Trustee and member of the Board of Directors of CaSE (Campaign for Science and Engineering), from 2012 – 2015.

Our Members

After completing a BA in History at UCL and some further years working in Europe and Asia, Miranda returned home to complete herMSc, PhD and several fellowships at the University of Edinburgh. She is now an Honorary Fellow of the University of Edinburgh and an Anniversary Fellow in Philosophy and Literature at the University of Stirling.
