Lara is a Lecturer in the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on the lithosphere, the rigid outer layer of the Earth that makes up the tectonic plates, and how it interacts with both the underlying mantle and processes at the Earth’s surface. She uses an interdisciplinary approach with a wide range of collaborators and data to understand these fundamentals of how our planet works, including their influence on geohazards such as earthquakes and volcanism. Collecting these data can mean living and working on a ship in the middle of the ocean for up to two months! She is also interested in the use of machine learning in the Earth sciences and in public engagement, particularly event and material co-creation with education professionals.
