Dr Joan Ma is a speech and language therapist and researcher whose work sits at the intersection of healthcare, technology, and education. Based at Queen Margaret University, her research focuses on swallowing and communication disorders, exploring how innovations such as ultrasound imaging can improve clinical assessment, rehabilitation, and patient outcomes. Passionate about bridging the gap between research and practice, Joan works closely with clinicians, engineers, and people with lived experience to co-create solutions to complex healthcare challenges. Through the Young Academy of Scotland, Joan hopes to contribute to interdisciplinary collaboration and conversations that create positive change across society.
