Dr Jano van Hemert (MSc 1998, PhD 2002; Leiden University, The Netherlands) is a Senior Research Manager and Academic Liaison at Optos. His main area of research is in computer science and its applications. His imaging research group develops novel algorithms on retinal images to improve eye health care.

Since 2010, he is an Honorary Fellow in the College of Science and Engineering of the University of Edinburgh in recognition of his leadership in the research programme of the UK National e-Science Centre supported by a prestigious EPSRC Platform Grant. Before that he held research associate and fellow posts at the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (CWI) of the Netherlands, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Vienna University of Technology.

From 2005 until 2011 he was a visiting researcher at the Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh of the UK's Medical Research Council.

Mark is a lecturer in chemistry at the University of Glasgow, specialising in finding sustainable ways to produce fuels and remove pollutants from the environment. As part of his research, Mark co-invented a new type of water electrolyser, which is being spun out from the University of Glasgow.
