Dr Inge Birnie is senior lecturer in the Institute of Education at the University of Strathclyde where she works in the field of (minority) language education. She is particularly interested in the protection and maintenance of minority languages and cultures, in the “real” as well as “virtual” world. Through her work with the Council of Europe Advisory Committee on the Framework Convention for the Protection of National Minorities and UNESCO she focusses on human rights for minority communities. Within Scotland she has been involved in initiatives to strengthen the (spoken) use of the Gaelic language in the community.
Her current work also focusses on ensuring that AI technologies include minority languages and do not contribute to new and existing forms of discrimination and exclusion.
In her spare time she is a keen runner and likes to spend time in the outdoors. She is also working toward gaining a black belt in karate with lessons delivered through the medium of Gaelic.
