Helina is a Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of Strathclyde. She completed her PhD in Medicine at University College London in 2017 before undertaking her postdoctoral training at Queen’s University Belfast and University College Dublin, where she remains an adjunct Assistant Professor. Her research focuses on understanding survival and immune evasion mechanisms of atypical and emerging bacterial pathogens.
In 2020, Helina was named one of the 30 under 30 Outstanding Young Scientists Worldwide by the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Disease and was a working group member for the creation of the Young Academy Ireland (Acadamh Óg na hÉireann). In addition to her research, Helina is a founding member and Editor-in-Chief of the open research platform, Access Microbiology.
