Fiona is a Professor of Parasitology at the University of the West of Scotland. Her research is spans both the medical and environmental spheres with specific projects focusing on the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in the environment and on amoeba pathogens in humans and fish. Her research in this area has gained international recognition and has also made a considerable impact on public and health service engagement and she has several collaborations with industry. She is also passionate about mentoring early career researchers and PhD students in the area of Infectious Disease, Immunology and Biomedical Science and their interdisciplinary skills development. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and Higher Education Academy. She is also passionate STEM ambassador to encourage young people into Science.

She designs and delivers interactive and visual ‘big picture thinking’ sessions for senior officials. These sessions focus on addressing key policy challenges, teasing out their interdependencies, and situating them in their global context.
