Mr Bill Surradge has been an employee within the School of Applied Sciences Technical Team at Edinburgh Napier University since 2011, with his current role of Lab Technician in Biomedical Science starting in 2014. Here, Bill works alongside the academic staff and senior technicians to develop and roll out the practical teaching provision. In 2015, Bill was the first member of the team to achieve Associate Fellow accreditation with Advance HE. Bill has supported many technicians in their applications and achieved Fellow accreditation in 2025. Bill is professionally registered as a Registered Scientist with the Royal Society of Biology and the Scottish Network Co-ordinator for the Institute of Science and Technology.
Since 2020, an increasing proportion of Bill’s role is dedicated to teaching: demonstrating method and materials development, digital resource development, and leading workshops and practical classes related to Health and Safety practices and good laboratory technique. He has a focus on making labs safe, accessible and enjoyable experiences for students. In 2024, Bill won the Edinburgh Napier Students Association Excellence Award for Exceptional Non-Academic Support, as nominated and voted for by the students of ENU.
