Dr Afiya Holder is Trinidadian/Barbadian but has dedicated over 20 years to advocating and contributing to a more socially sustainable tourism and travel industry globally as a tourism and marketing specialist, consultant, author, and public speaker.
Afiya is internationally recognised for her consultancy projects and research with research pathways covering topical areas including tourism in Small Island Developing States (SIDS), climate resiliency, mitigation and adaptation, climate loss and damage, tourist sociocultural aversions and misbehaviours, diversity, equality, and inclusion (DEI), Indigenous tourism, and digital transformations for social good
Afiya serves as Associate Editor and Podcast Producer for Tourism Geographies Journal. She also serves on editorial review boards and grants review boards such as Carnegie Trust, Journal of Sustainable Tourism and Current Issues in Tourism. She also actively publishes in top-tiered journals and keynotes at numerous international conferences and seminars. Her recent research projects include work with destinations (e.g. Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Australia, Fiji, and New Zealand). Some projects include North Stradbroke Island Economic Transition Strategy (Australia), Managing Growth and Sustainable Tourism Governance in Asia and the Pacific (Chengdu, China), Myanmar Tourism Sector Analysis-Business Innovation Facility, DFID/UK AID.
