Young Academy AGM, Stirling

The annual two day business meeting of the Young Academy of Scotland will be taking place on the 29th and 30th of August this year, kindly hosted by Stirling University. In addition to AGM business, the first day will focus on the theme of International Links and we will be joined by representatives from several European Young Academies. The second day will be dedicated to Working Group project development.

Addressing Hate and Violence Workshop

Addressing Hate and Violence: The Scottish Experience of Communities & Complexity.

This workshop seeks to explore what can be done to garner the support of ever-larger and diverse groups and communities in the efforts to prevent violence, build stronger, more enduring social relationships and, ultimately, build more peaceful societies. This initial meeting will bring together community activists, police practitioners, representatives from central and local government and local community stakeholders from a range of groups,institutions and backgrounds. Keynote remarks will be from the Scottish Government’s Cabinet Secretary for Justice, Mr. Kenny MacAskill

YAS June Plenary

The next YAS plenary will be held on June 18th 2013 at Glasgow Caledonian University. This meeting will feature a Question Time style panel debate, organised by the Health and Wellbeing Working Group, on "The Challenges Of and Opportunities For Interdisciplinary Research on Health Inequalities"

Launch Event for Lab Notes at the RSE

The launch event for YAS Member Dr Jane Stanley’s Lab Notes will take place at the RSE on 14 May at 6pm. Lab Notes is an innovative piece for music and film, set in a modern systems biology lab. The event will commence with the screening of the short film and there will be a panel discussion focusing on the process involved in collaborating between the arts and sciences. Following this there will be a drinks reception. Please view the programme for more information.

The next of our meetings outside Edinburgh, this will take place on 6th March 2013 and will be hosted by the University of St Andrews. There will be plenty of time for Working Groups as well as a debate with some guest speakers focussing on "Strategies to address inequalities in the workplace". Our Members

Dr Ik Siong Heng is a physicist at the University of Glasgow. His main research focuses on gravitational wave astronmy. Gravitational waves, predicted by Einstein in his theory of General Relativity, are ripples in the fabric of the universe we live in (aka spacetime). These gravitational ripples will uncover the mysteries that lie in the darkest, densest regions of the Universe.
