This summer new YAS members, Dr. Mhairi Towler Director of Vivomotion (www.vivomotion.co.uk), a scientific animation company and Dr. Adam Stokes, an interdisciplinary scientist and engineer, and Director of The University of Edinburgh FabLab, got chatting about potential collaborations at the induction ceremony at the RSE in August. Mhairi had already started working with existing YAS member Dr. Nicola Stanley-Wall from the College of Life Sciences at University of Dundee, to realise her vision for a special exhibition being held in November as part of the Great British Bioscience Festival run by the BBSRC.
In September 2012, Dr Aileen Fyfe (St Andrews) was president of the History of Science section at the British Science Festival, which took place this year in Aberdeen. She took an unusual approach to the task of organising a presidential session: running a Victorian Science Spectacular show, which recreated an 1890s experience of popular science.
Dr Tiffany Wood heads the Edinburgh Complex Fluids Partnership (ECFP) which works with all sectors across the formulation industry to solve issues and provide innovative solutions. Established in 2012, ECFP is based within the Soft Condensed Matter Physics Research Group at the University of Edinburgh and exploits academic understanding of how the fundamental physical interactions between components define the microstructure and bulk properties (e.g. flow behaviour and stability) of products.
