This is an invitation to a YAS private dinner sponsored by University of Edinburgh Principle's office. There will be a series of such gatherings during the year with the idea of having a relaxed gathering among ourselves.

The first one is scheduled for Monday 14 of January, sorry for the short notice, could you please let me know ASAP if you can make it as I have to give the exact numbers for catering Thursday :(

You may recall that YAS members from the University of Edinburgh met with their Principal, Professor O'Shea, in October. As a result of the meeting, the Principal offered to support a monthly supper meeting. The meetings are not only for UoE members, but where possible, the wider YAS membership. Although not everyone will manage to participate all the time, it is hoped that these meetings will become another useful forum for discussing new ideas between the main YAS meetings. Please note that no general YAS business will be conducted at these meetings, so those unable to attend needn’t worry about missing out on any wider decision-making; the meetings are about strengthening our networks, building new links and coming up with new ideas or moving existing ideas forward.

The first four dates have been arranged as follows: 14 January, 18 February, 21 March and 18 April. The suppers will be held in a central University of Edinburgh location starting at 7pm.

Ten of the University of Edinburgh YAS members attended an afternoon meeting with the Principal, Professor O'Shea, in early October. Each member had the opportunity to describe their current research activity before a more general discussion about the YAS and how the University might be able to promote interdisciplinary working among members. A positive outcome from the meeting was the Principal’s offer to support a monthly supper meeting. Though primarily aimed at the University of Edinburgh YAS members, it was felt the greatest benefit would come from also including those beyond the academic sector based in and around Edinburgh, and keeping the invitation open to all YAS members who might be able to attend occasionally. The Principal was very supportive of the potential opportunities that could be generated by these informal meetings and the proposal is being progressed. Although not everyone will manage to participate all the time, it is hoped that these meetings will become one forum for discussing new ideas between the main YAS meetings.
